Design Miami

December 4 – 8, 2013
Meridian Avenue and 19th Street, Miami Beach Convention Center, Miami Beach
http://designmiamiblog.com/

Design Miami/ is the global forum for design. Each fair brings together the most influential collectors, gallerists, designers, curators and critics from around the world in celebration of design culture and commerce.

2013 Highlights
Galleries // 29 of the world’s most active design galleries will present works from both emerging and iconic designers from around the globe. Design On/Site // 6 independent galleries will present high quality solo exhibitions of contemporary design. Design Commission // this year’s pavilion entrance will be created by formlessfinder, a conceptual ‘formless’ architectural practice which invites its audience to re-learn its relationship to architecture and the constructed space. Their pavilion for this year’s fair, TENT PILE, will have a foundation of 500 tons of sand supporting a custom-milled aluminum cantilevered roof. After researching the unique geology and geography of Miami, formlessfinder found it intriguing that much of the city’s architecture sits on this ever shifting material. Inspired by the fluidity required of local building techniques and the city’s unique tropical-modern architecture, formlessfinder designed a tribute that displays the unexpected possibilities of materials.

The program of exhibitions presented by carefully selected galleries from Europe, the United States and Asia will be enriched by a dynamic series of design talks, site-specific installations and satellite events. Details of Design Miami’s cultural program, including Design Talks, Design Performances, and Design Satellites, will be announced in the coming weeks.

Swarovski Crystal Palace will be back for the sixth consecutive year as a main sponsor of Design Miami. This year, Swarovski Crystal Palace has commissioned award-winning, Brazilian architect and designer Guilherme Torres to create an installation inspired by water conservation and stewardship. The importance of water as a resource in the crystal making process led to the creation of the Swarovski Waterschool in 1999, currently active in many countries worldwide Titled Mangue Groove, this experimental architectural installation will be unveiled at Design Miami. Torres’s design will incorporate Swarovski’s lead-free Advanced Crystal that will fill synthetic tubes, linked by geometric joints and lit with energy efficient LEDs. The structure itself will resemble a mangrove forest.

NADA Art Fair – Miami Beach

December 5 – 8, 2013
The Deauville Beach Resort, 6701 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33141
http://www.newartdealers.org

Founded in 2002, New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) is a not-for-profit collective of professionals working with contemporary art. Our mission is to create an open flow of information, support, and collaboration within our field and to develop a stronger sense of community among our constituency. NADA’s fair is held in parallel with Art Basel Miami Beach and is recognized as a much needed alternative assembly of the world’s youngest and strongest art galleries dealing with emerging Contemporary Art. It is the only major American art fair to be run by a non-profit organization.

Our international group of members includes both galleries and individuals (art professionals, independent curators, and established gallery directors). The various perspectives and ideas offered by our diverse roster creates a network which, at its most basic, is a resource which people could contribute to and take as much (or as little) as they are inclined. The benefits for some may be a matter of business, for others a source of intellectual or aesthetic stimulation.

To date, our initiatives have succeeded on two fronts: making the contemporary arts more accessible for the general public, and creating opportunities that nurture the growth of emerging artists, curators, and galleries. Our EVENTS have included: artist talks/gallery walks with critics and curators; benefits in support of charitable institutions; members-only seminars to stimulate dedication and ethics in our profession; and an annual art fair in Miami, which is held in December and is free and open to the public.

Don’t plan on walking to this art fair, look for the free shuttle service near Art Basel Miami Beach.
The pick-up and drop-off is at 17th and Washington, near the southeast corner of the convention center. Shuttle service begins each day at 10:30am.

New Material Art Fair

Chesterfield, Lily and Leon Hotels, 855 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL
December 5 – 8, 2013
http://www.newmaterialartfair.com/

NEW MATERIAL is a boutique exposition premiering this December at the Chesterfield Hotel, one block from Scope, and three blocks from the Untitled Art Fair, concurrent with Art Basel Miami Beach. The focus of NEW MATERIAL is to expose brave departures in the practices of established artists and galleries; particularly bodies of work unfettered by trends and to date untested in the commercial realm.

NEW MATERIAL contends that economic success can sometimes stunt the impulse for experimentation, and that creativity requires risk, courage, and a willingness to at times forgo recognition, acceptance and profit for the sake of an artist’s natural inclination towards growth. This pivotal stage can include everything from subtle shifts in style, experimentation with media, materials, or recognized ranges of aesthetic interests, to a complete abandonment of the tried and true. NEW MATERIAL seeks to provide asylum for artists engaged in this vulnerable state of flux.

When considering the escalating number of satellite fairs, quantity can cloud quality. NEW MATERIAL attempts to return focus to the artist’s process as a distinguishing premise, in a context where materiality, making and the market continue to mutate.

MIAMI PROJECT
December 3 – 8, 2013
NE 29th Street and NE 1st Avenue, Miami, FL 33137
http://www.miami-project.com/

Miami Project will return to the Wynwood Art District from December 3 to 8, 2013. It will again present a selection of historically important and cutting-edge contemporary work side by side, with a unique emphasis on the strength of individual exhibitors’ programs irrespective of their primary focus. Sixty galleries from across the United States will show at the fair.

Galleries that represent prominent estates like those of Larry Rivers and Robert Mapplethorpe will exhibit next to those showing today’s most exciting young artists. Work from the historic avant-garde will inform and contextualize the best examples of contemporary practice. Galleries are curated into Miami Project based on a serious commitment to important living artists; extensive involvement with remarkable estates; and the strength of their program generally.

The fair’s emphasis on presenting quality works in an intimate setting won over its 20,000 visitors last year, and the 2013 edition will again be boutique-scale, allowing for comfortable viewing in a relaxed atmosphere. Miami Project is housed in a deluxe, tent with soaring cathedral ceilings erected especially for the fair. It will feature roomy aisles and extravagant lounges for a pleasant visitor experience. Located at NE 29th Street and NE 1st Avenue in Miami.

Miami Project is presented with support from the Wall Street Journal, Luxe magazine, Perrier, the Midtown Doral, Porcelanosa, New Amsterdam Vodka, and Shellback Rum.

ZONES Art Fair Miami

3850 N. Miami CT. Miami, FL 33137
Design District
December 3 – 9, 2013
http://www.zonesartfair.org/

The 7th Edition of Zones Art Fair Miami returns this year at the Miami Design District and will feature PERFORMIA 1 an international performance art festival.

The ZONES Contemporary Art Fair takes place December 3 – 9, 2013. ZONES is wired to the cultural rhythm of Miami through its ten years of work with the artistic community as an activator in the cultural scene of this city presenting the best-unrepresented artists through their unique and exciting programs. We seek to make non-represented artists visible to collectors and curators. This year’s Zones will merge the fair concept with performance festival to create a niche performance based fair that includes live performances, exhibitions, video screening, talks and music.

Zones’ focus is on making the work of up-and-coming artists more accessible to the public. This year’s edition crosses multiple creative disciplines to offer a daily exciting program of live action performances by international artists under the title PERFORMIA1. PERFORMIA1 is the first edition of a performance festival, which seeks to introduce performance art to the art fair platform. PERFORMIA 1′s aim is to inform viewers of the potential capacities of performance art today. The fair offers visitors a detour from the labyrinthine art-fair set-up. One can encounter anything from sculpture, video screenings and paintings to performance pieces, all in a casual atmosphere. Zones’ new location at the Design District, across from Locust Projects and close to the De La Cruz Collection allows for viewers to explore an exciting and creative area of Miami.

There are a couple solutions that can be taken
to counteract the harmful consequences deforestation produces.
A graceful, synchronized swimming routine starts, with some bubbles
blown in the water and a duet singing of songs.
Humanitarian teaching opportunities provide an opportunity to gain multicultural teaching experience.
