Tamaki Kern Shares Her Love For Art and Japan

What is your nickname?

My name is Tamaki, but I go by Maki Tamaki Kern Shares Her Love For Art and Japan

What interests you about art?

I love the power of art to evoke something in people that they didn’t know that they had inside of them. What is “great” art and what is not is perhaps relative, but I think that art can be defined as something that is thought provoking. There’s no “wrong” way to feel about a piece of art, which is its true beauty. The artist has expressed themselves, but how you interpret art and how you let it affect you is entirely up to you. Art is what you make of it. Love for Art.

Are you an artist yourself or is it just something your interested in?

Though I consider myself a performing artist of sorts, I will not lie and say that I have any talent in creating visual/fine arts. That being said, I feel as though because I have a performance background, I feel very connected to all varieties of art on a deep level, and feel very passionately about spreading art of all varieties to those who have not been deeply moved by it yet.

Who is your favorite artist and why?

Lately, I’ve been pretty in to Yoshitomo Nara’s work. I happen to be partly Japanese, and something about his work really speaks to me accurately about Japanese popular culture. I think it’s fascinating how he can capture such a wide scope with his slightly distorted cartoonism.

If you could pick 4 people, dead or alive, to have dinner with who would it be?

I would love to have dinner with….

Meryl Streep, because she is the epitome of what I want to be when I’m her age. She’s just the coolest. Period.

Vincent Van Gogh. Even though I’m pretty sure history has told us he was crazy. Still, I’d like to see the roots of his genius, and what separated him from other madmen to inspire him to create such beauty.

JK Rowling, because her books, aside from shaping my childhood, probably in some inherent way shaped the way most of us now in our late teens/early twenties think about life. Talk about shaping the minds of a generation

Leonardo da Vinci. We’ve all heard the legends, but what was this mathematician/artist/inventor/writer/musician really like? I’d like to meet him if only to get him to give me the secrets of multi-tasking

What kind of music do you listen to?

I’m pretty open to a lot of things, but I dominantly listen to rock. Lately, I’ve been getting into bands with happier, pop-ier, 60s-80s kind of vibes, like Blondie, Madness, Ludo, and The Kinks.

What is your star sign?

I’m a Sagittarius, which I guess means…. I’m optimistic and rational but surprisingly sentimental? I don’t know, maybe o.o

What is your favorite place in the world to travel to?

Unfortunately, I haven’t had a lot of opportunity to travel yet! I’ve only ever stayed in the States or gone to Japan. I do love Japan oodles and oodles, and I would have to say my favorite part of the US to explore is pretty close to home, in the Pacific Northwest. I’m all about the evergreens and the mountainous beauty and the clear, sparkling lakes Tamaki Kern Shares Her Love For Art and Japan

What is your favorite thing about Artsnapper?

I’m really excited to begin working with Artsnapper because I think the idea of people sharing art that they’re excited about is as important of just the discovery of it.
