Artist Van Gogh
Many of you know Van Gogh and are familiar with many of his paintings. Some of you also believe that he is one of the best artist who ever lived. But did you know that he only sold 1 (one) painting in his lifetime? While it may sound absurd (and sad :() it is true. The only painting he ever sold was Red Vineyard at Arles, which was purchased by Anna Boch in 1890 for 400 Francs (equivalent to 1,000 – 1,500 today). Some historians even argue the legitimacy of this sale as it is believed that it was given as a gift. Well, in that case one of the best artist of our time actually did not sell any of his work (hmmm).
Van Gogh created over 900 paintings in his career as a painter. Many of these paintings were created over a 10 year span right before his death. What I found to be most shocking was that his most renowned artwork, The Starry Night, was created in Saint-Remy-de-Prevence (France), which was an Asylum. Was he placed in an asylum because he was really crazy? or was he was so transcending that people though he was crazy?
All I know is that it is a shame that Van Gogh never received the recognition that he deserved while he was alive.
How many of Van Gogh’s Paintings can you spot below? Hopefully you can guess more than the number of paintings he ever sold.
